• 5.0 out of 5 stars from VimFuego -- This is the book J R Hartley WISHES he wrote : Dave Hitchins’ debut is a hugely entertaining, very funny and ultimately life-affirming account of growing up bitten by the fly-fishing bug. His obsession takes him around the world, into all manner of unexpected scrapes and bizarre situations – the anecdotes range from the hilarious to the confessional and all of them give us an insight into a writer with an easy, dry wit and a natural gift for storytelling. We also learn quite a lot on the way: about fishing, about how pursuing a hobby for decades contributes to self-identity and wellbeing, and, naturally, about what the author likes to place on the end of his rod. There's quite a lot about fishing in it too, but like when I watch 'Gone Fishing' its not all about that, there's more. Much more. This will keep you entertained, I found it difficult to put down! He devoured it in a day and said I should read the chapters on Patagonia as we travelled there ourselves. I did and loved them - the almost poetic descriptions of the landscapes are so true. I went back to the start and read the whole book and loved it. A very honest and at times poignant account of growing up and realising what is important in life.
